Lancaster & District Hockey Club’s Over 35s secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against a resilient Sale Bay Vets O35s side, staging an impressive second-half comeback at The University of Cumbria on Sunday in the England Hockey O35s Competition.
The home side took an initial lead midway through the first half when Sarah Kettlewell found the net in the 26th minute, rewarding LDHC’s early pressure. However, Sale Bay Vets hit back quickly, equalising just six minutes later in the 32nd minute. The visitors carried this momentum into the final minutes of the half, striking again in the 40th minute to ensure LDHC went into the break trailing 2-1.
The second half demanded a major effort, and LDHC delivered. The fightback began in spectacular fashion in the 61st minute, courtesy of Kerry Read. Showing exceptional skill and timing, Read connected with a brilliant volley—already tipped as a Goal of the Season contender—to level the score at 2-2. With the momentum now firmly shifted, Julie Walker completed the impressive turnaround just seven minutes later, putting the finishing touch on a well-worked attack in the 68th minute to make it 3-2. LDHC held firm for the remainder of the match to secure the victory.
It was a true team effort, but two players were highlighted for their outstanding contributions. The joint Players of the Match were awarded to Ali Standeven-Johns for her commanding performance, and goal-scorer Sarah Kettlewell, whose early strike and overall work rate were crucial.
