Lancaster 2s faced Nomads 1s this weekend in the first local derby of the season. Nomads started the better of the 2 teams putting pressure on the Lancaster defence of Katie Oliver, Lottie Horner, Frances Archer and Amelia Welch from the start. Goalkeeper Rebecca Halliwell was forced to make a number of key saves to keep Lancaster in the game. Nomads broke first with a well worked short corner routine beating the Lancaster defence.

Lancaster were not deterred by this and pushed for an equaliser. The midfield of Sophie Christopherson, Susie Crayton and Carla Bleasdale worked the ball together to get Lancaster forward. 5 minutes before half time Lancaster earned a penalty flick. Julie Walker volunteered to take it, as the whistle blew, she calmly flicked the ball with power into the top right corner of the goal, leaving the diving Nomads keeper no chance.

At half time the game was equal with both sides scoring. Lancaster started the second half as they finished the first on top. The forwards Emily Verden and Jess Dawson made great leading runs helping Lancaster get behind the Nomads defence earning a number of short corners. After an influx of short corner Lancaster finally converted one, a great strike from Julie Walker from the top of the D beat the Nomads keeper and defence who could only watch as the ball crashed into the back board.

Nomads didn’t give up though and fought for an equaliser. The Lancaster defence and goalkeeper were equal to everything that was thrown at them and kept them at bay.
